7 Tips for Selecting Art for Your Space

Give yourself space and time to consider and choose art.

Here are our 7 tips for choosing ART for your space.

1. Start by considering the Tone or Feeling you’d like to create.

Fun and playful, calm and meditative, moody and sensual? Also consider who will use the space and is the art appropriate, for example nudes are better suited to intimate spaces like the bedroom NOT the formal dining!

2. Decide if the artwork will be a ‘HERO’ (focal point in art terms) or a piece to compliment the room overall.

Either way there should be a visual ‘conversation’ between the items in the room. The conversation link may be colour, texture, shape … even theme.
If the art is the HERO than it’s easy… make it big and use the colour palette from the art to influence your styling choices.
Complimentary piece – take into consideration the dominant colours in the room… the bedhead, lounge, wall colour, curtains? Make sure the art connects to some of those elements, without being too ‘matchy-matchy’.

3. Use the ART to direct the eye (and move the body).

A beautiful artwork can draw you into a space, up a stairs or down a hallway.  Where do you want to direct your visitors?

4. Size – The artwork should be proportionate to the room.

If you are anything like us, your instinct is to start measuring out approximately with your hands to get an idea of the scale. But we have a better solution… use our Hoverlay app to view the art on their walls to more accurately check the size. Our clients find it really useful to view the art on their wall before they commit, knowing how it will look in your space before you buy is important.

5. Know your budget.

Falling in love with an artwork beyond your budget is heartbreaking, save yourself the pain and search for art in your price range.

6. Stay open.

You might be surprised with what catches your eye it might be a painting or a drawing or even a photograph.

7. Follow your heart.

If you buy what you love, you’ll be living in a space you enjoy.
Remember your art can easily be moved to another space, it will look and feel different in different rooms and lighting.
