Restoration by Kathryn Fenton is a surrealist mixed media painting from an evolving series relating to a keen interest of mine being the current state of our

global environment.

Many years ago I studied Chinese Brush Painting and the philosophies behind a lot of Oriental Art and the one of the greatest take home

messages that has stayed with me from their ancient observations, is “the insignificance of man in nature”.  Their reverence and the importance

placed on our reliance and therefore respect for nature to give us sustenance is indeed placed on a higher pedestal. In traditional Chinese Art

in particular, the landscape dominates and man or any figures are placed quite small within the frame.

By placing the lilies high in the composition of this painting and dominating over the landscape, is to shine the light and focus once again on the beauty, reverence and healing properties of nature we need to preserve for humanity’s sake and our future survival.

The chaotic, fragmented abstracted background is our world in a constant state of flux where we need at times to literally “stop and smell the lilies” as it were.
