‘Firesticks’ by Tillian –

“Oh how the dry forest thirsts for those seed cracking flames”. Tillian

In ‘Firesticks’, I conjure a visionary abstraction that honours the ancient practice of Cultural Burning—a regenerative, ceremonial relationship with land maintained by Indigenous Australians for tens of thousands of years. This painting does not depict landscape in a representational sense; rather, it becomes landscape through gesture, colour, and form. Swaths of crimson and ochre surge through cooler blues and greens, evoking the nourishing rhythm of low-intensity flame through forest understorey—seed-cracking fire, not destructive blaze. The work’s organic undulations suggest both vegetal forms and firelines, positioning the viewer within a moment of ecological resurgence. Amidst the spectral light, one senses the memory of the land itself—burning not to perish, but to awaken. Through this synthesis of abstraction and place-based knowledge, I invite a re-calibration of our settler-conditioned perception of fire, presenting it instead as ceremony, kinship, and renewal.

Painted in the highlands south of Sydney, on Yuin country, ‘Firesticks’ reverberates with what poet and philosopher Tyson Yunkaporta calls “pattern thinking”—a method of reading land, fire, and water as living texts. The painting becomes an invocation: of listening, learning, and letting Country speak.

Painted September 2021. Signed/dated bottom right. Shipped with certificate of authenticity. Satin varnished with UV protection. Edges sealed with black lacquer. Ready to hang with D-rings and cable. Unframed.
