“I have always had a love for exotic places, flowers and the plant world,” Carley said. “In my twenties, I travelled around Australia and fell in love with the outdoor lifestyle, the nature and the fact that I could go to any city and it was full of plants. I love different cultures and this is present in my art.”

Art has been a lifelong passion for Carley but one that wasn’t fully realised until in Australia. She painted a commissioned piece and the process and the encouragement that followed was a revelation for her, a ‘now or never’ moment as she described it herself. “I am so passionate about my art. It has given me a drive I never had before!”

Creativity is a fluid process for Carley Bourne. The flow always starts from a colour palette with a base colour. There are colour palettes that are easier and more comfortable for her such as the blues and greens where as other colours, lilacs for example, take her out of her comfort zone and challenge her. The colour choice goes hand in hand with an idea of whether the painting might evolve around a floral theme for example or perhaps a bohemian style. The twist is that this initial topic hardly ever remains. “I don’t work with anything set up and everything can change; the colour, the shapes or the details.”

Physical movement and music are a part of her creative process too. Music can take the painting to a distinctive direction. It can introduce more detail or do the opposite and add more dominant abstract elements. The ‘flowiness’ and the abstract movement are enhanced against the patterns, details and layers. “I like the calmness of minimalism but when I paint, I feel that more is better. I like a painting that feels alive. You are looking at one part and each time you look at it again, you find more.”
“For ‘Mediterranean Muse’ for example, I took different styles and impressions of places I have visited in the Mediterranean. The colour palette was blues and yellows with the light pinks that you get there. The olive leaves, ceramic vases and fruit bowls. The white wash buildings of Santorini. I intuitively work towards these object impressions.”

“Art adds interest and intrigue, joy and happiness to our everyday lives. It adds excitement to the mundane. It makes people feel, uplifts them!”, Carley said. “It creates a different world of escapism and beauty. Whether art is aesthetic or thought provoking, it is always full of emotion.”
