Allie Tullah: Uncontained, Colourful Energy

Allie Tullah is a Melbourne-based, abstract artist whose striking canvasses are filled with movement, vibrant colours and uncontained energy and joy.

“I paint abstract. I would describe my art as painting with emotions. It looks very different every time I paint, the free flow from my heart,” she described. “It all forms a happy coincidence.”

Allie has always been driven by her creativity. She played the piano and drew dresses as a child, painted ceramics some years later and found her passion for painting canvasses while on maternity leave with her second son. Her creative passion has driven her to learn and experiment with different mediums and the way those can be intertwined. This has formed her own striking and unique style.

“After I had my second child, I had minimal time and space so I was limited with what I could do. Painting was perfect! I went to the store, bought some paints and canvasses and it was magic. It was meant to be.”

Allie is a mother to three boys and she has accredited her children to be the source of inspiration and the drive to push the boundaries.

“My children are just so energetic and their energy flows through me and my art. They are so boisterous,” she said. “Sometimes they suggest the colours, sometimes it is simply the energy that gets infused into the free flow of me painting.  My children are always with me and even my studio, which is separate from my house and in a different suburb. Half of the space is dedicated for my art and half for my children.”

“I do not plan too much before I start painting. It depends on what I am painting; floral blooms or abstract. The abstract paintings start with a colour and a composition. I start with edging in and the darkest colour always goes in first,” she described her creative process. “I build the painting layer by layer and towards the end, I finetune it.”

“For the florals, I have a very specific way of painting. The whole background comes first, then I mix up the colours and I quite literally splat them on. I leave it to dry for a couple of days and I sketch my blooms.”

Allie sees art as a language that has taught her to express herself without words.

“When I paint, I want to talk to you through my art. My paintings tell a story. The story you see in it might be different to the story I was telling but it is equally as relevant and valid.”
