Rebecca Koerting: Inspiration of Love & Connection

“My art is inspired by my childhood love and connection with the natural world – I paint secret worlds that I imagine – hidden worlds deep in the ocean and pockets of the sky we will never see.”

As a child, Rebecca Koerting was forever daydreaming of different worlds, often underneath the ocean surface.  Nowadays, she is an abstract artist based in Perth, Western Australia. Originally from seaside Victoria, she has always expressed herself creatively but for most of her life, just for herself.

“I have always drawn and painted for myself, to fill my own home and life with art. Friends and visitors always admired and complimented my paintings but it wasn’t until recently that I started to paint for others as well,” she described. “And then I found wonderful galleries such as Art Lovers Australia, which make buying and selling art much more accessible.”

Rebecca started as a graphic designer and credits her love of colour to this time of her life and career. “It comes down to the feeling through the colour and the psychology that is attached to it,” she described. “I don’t like telling people what to see in my paintings as this needs to be about the feeling the viewer gets as well as their own interpretation and reflections. This is probably where the love of the abstract comes from too!”

Later in her career, Rebecca was an art director of an interior design magazine which then again grew and defined her love for interiors. “Everything I did before in my life has made me what I am now.”

It is an interesting process to see Rebecca’s paintings come alive. It all starts with the blank, white canvas and her chosen base colour. This colour then gets paired up with more colours layer by layer. “I like to think about each layer and each detail before I make my next move. I have several paintings going on at once as each layer and colour component takes a long time to dry. It all takes weeks.”

Rebecca always frames her paintings before they are ready and hangs them up on a wall in her house. She then sits in front of her paintings to determine whether they are finished or not. More often than not, the paintings come down the wall again and go back to the studio and this process might get repeated several times before the painting is done.

“For me, the colour is always central in the artwork. I don’t wear colour and I don’t decorate with it, but when it comes to my art, colour is in the heart of it.”
