Julia Chuquis is an abstract expressionist artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. For her, art is a way to express deep emotion without words. “I consider myself an abstract, gestural painter as I intuitively paint from inner emotion, using various mediums and tools.”
“I love painting abstract pieces, as it comes from a place within me that I know is connected to the source of all things,” she said. “We are all one. The same energy that flows in you also flows in me, in nature, in the flowers and birds. We are all connected. It is this connection that I respect and seek to be in tune with. I show my gratitude to the universe by hoping to capture the moment’s essence onto the canvas.”

“When I am painting, I feel connected to the energy source that powers the universe. Creating art for me is like a language of emotion and feelings. I want to stand apart and create powerful art that is drawn from the force that has created nature.”

Colour is an essential element on the canvas. Julia loves creating her own colours and rarely uses colours straight from the tube. “I am currently obsessed with colours that sit between two when it is neither one nor the other,” she described. “My favourite colour is found on a Eucalyptus tree. It is a creamy yellow-green. I love pushing it to that border when you cannot determine if it sits in yellow or green.”

Julia works predominantly with acrylics and oils but uses water-soluble wax pastels and graphite sticks. She loves exploring different mixing mediums to create textures and layers. She often starts with acrylics and then continues to build up the surface of the painting with oils. And like everything in her art, the textures too derive from nature. “As far as the textures go, my favourite ones come from the textures found on trees.”

Julia has always been creative and believes her studies began as a child growing up on a farm. Her curiosity and love for nature inspired her to explore her surroundings, observe and touch everything she saw and constantly feed her subconscious with texture and colour from nature. After her schooling, she focused solely on creative arts. She studied and took courses at the Milan Art Institute and Adelaide School of Arts. While she gained valuable knowledge and experience through more formalised studies, she still accredits exploring nature as her most prominent teacher.

As Julia’s creativity has always been connected to her natural surroundings, interiors seem like an obvious continuation. While developing properties, she expressed her creativity through interior design and creating artwork to style the homes. She has described her art as “a fusion between interior design and subconscious creation” and believes that if an artwork is large and powerful enough, it will become the main furniture in a room and the rest are simply accessories.
“I love the interior design trends that bring nature inside. This is what I am most passionate about. When picking my colour palette, interior design has a prominent influence in the process.”

As an artist, Julia Chuquis is always experimenting. She has only scratched the surface of her potential. She speaks about her dream of discovering a new method not used before. Something to express her wonder in what she sees and feels and how she relays that on the canvas. “I believe our potential is unlimited, and our commitment determines our achievements. I’ve committed my whole self to the journey of discovering who I am as an artist and what I can achieve. My artwork drives my journey, and I am open to wherever the universe guides me.”
