‘Annunciation’ painted by Tillian 7.5’25

“The land is not silent, it sings through stone, water, leaf, and sky
. We do not walk on Country, we walk with it.” Tillian

In ‘Annunciation’, I fuse sacred narrative with ecological consciousness. A pale cherubic figure descends through the sky—part angel, part ancestral spirit—toward a sensuous terrain rendered in mineral reds, greens, and ochres. Landscape and figure merge in a visionary field where revelation arises not from above, but within country itself. The descending spirit could be interpreted as a biblical angel or a Dreaming ancestor, a sky-being returning to initiate, renew, or speak. The central rock-body may also recall the Indigenous concept of the sacred feminine in landforms—places where law was received, stories birthed, children conceived through spiritual encounter.

In my broader practice, rooted in the Highland landscapes south of Sydney, I seek to paint what resists depiction: the numinous, the mythic, the relational pulse between body and terrain and in this work, I synthesize elements of abstraction, post-symbolism, and visionary ecology to build a new visual lexicon of sacred land. ‘Annunciation’ does not idealise nature as a silent retreat but offers it as a speaking, sensate field—alive with gesture, tension, and ancient breath. Annunciation here is not a pronouncement—it is a listening. The earth is not mute here—it is oracle.
