Torii by Carita Henriksson – As so very often when I start a work I have no idea of the image in mind. I love large canvases and this one offered me an opportunity to go big. I start with making marks on the canvas, every which way, no design, just filling the canvas. I then start to introduce colours, here and there, turning the canvas over and over. Finally some pattern starts to emerge to signal me what the painting wants to be. This one wanted a Japanese influence. I started to see several Torii structures , the Japanese gates to a temple. I followed that instinct and I quite like the result. Mind you, Torii gates are normally red, but this is artistic licence…
