Anya Love’s art is vibrant and expressive and refuses to fit into any category. Her bright and energetic canvasses draw inspiration from everything around them. For Anya, the notion of art as a reflection of the artist’s soul, most profound feelings, thoughts and experiences could not be more true. In our recent chat, Anya shared her journey, inspirations and the philosophy behind her diverse body of work.

When asked about what she paints and why, Anya delved into the emotional and philosophical roots of her work. “I suppose what I paint is probably a feeling,” she explained. Her paintings are not confined to a single style or medium; they are expressions of her inner world, capturing emotions, spiritual awakenings, and philosophical musings. “Why I paint is because I feel like I must. It’s a perfect way to express and explore those feelings and emotions.”
Anya’s creative process varies greatly depending on the piece she is working on. Sometimes, her work is meticulously planned, starting with sketches, ideas, and a series of compositions. Other times, the process is entirely intuitive, with Anya painting directly onto the canvas in a spontaneous, organic manner. “Some can be really intuitive, and some can be really pre-designed. Predetermined,” she said.

The journey from concept to completion can significantly impact the final piece. Planned works have a distinct identity and can be executed beautifully with precision. However, Anya believes that true beauty often emerges from the intuitive process, where mistakes and evolution during the painting add a unique character to the work.

Band-Aids don’t fix bullet holes | 51 x 61cm, Oil & oil sticks on canvas, Framed
One of the most intriguing aspects of Anya’s work is her refusal to be boxed into a single style or genre. This fluidity and versatility are both a source of personal satisfaction and a challenge in the art world, often demanding a consistent, branded style. “It’s a constant battle for me,” Anya admitted. Despite external pressures, she remains committed to exploring different styles, mediums, and messages, believing her artistic journey is about continuous exploration and change.

Before fully immersing herself in painting, Anya had a career in photography. This experience has significantly influenced her artistic practice. “I think that conceptually, composition, colour, the way you see something through a lens is huge,” she reflected. Anya often photographs her work as it evolves, using the lens to view the composition and make adjustments. This photographic perspective helps her see her paintings in a new light, ensuring that every element works harmoniously.

A recurring theme in Anya’s work is female empowerment and the metamorphosis women undergo throughout their lives. Her paintings often explore feminine identity and self-discovery, reflecting her interest in the evolving journey of women. “I think a lot of the time that is what I’m really exploring,” she said. Anya’s art invites viewers to connect with these themes, offering a space for reflection and resonance.

Anya’s art is a testament to the power of emotion, intuition, and continuous exploration. Her refusal to conform to a single style or medium allows her to create deeply personal and varied works that resonate with viewers on multiple levels. As she continues to evolve and experiment, Anya’s art remains a compelling journey of self-discovery and expression.
Her story is a powerful reminder that in the world of art, there are no rules—only endless possibilities.
