Dion Parker: Humour + Vibrancy = Art

Dion Parker is a fun-loving, contemporary, Gold Coast-based artist with a myriad of mediums to express himself.

“For me, it is all about self-expression. I like to create. I am always creating, almost seven days a week,” Dion said. “And I do get a bit antsy if I don’t create for a while. I am not the best at expressing myself through words or actions, so creativity is my way of staying sane and expressing myself accurately.”

“I was in my late twenties when I started to consider art as a career. I was always creative, but I had never thought I could be an artist. I just knew that I wanted to do more, and I needed to express myself more than I could living the lifestyle I did then. Since I started to create art, I have learnt more about myself as a person,” Dion said. “I would like to lead by example and encourage people to be themselves; to feel free and comfortable to express themselves.”

Dion works with a lot of different mediums and often explores the same theme through different materials. While he has been experimenting with ceramics and plywood lately, bronze sculpture seems his current favourite.

“I have always admired [bronze]. It lasts for a long time, and there are so many old bronze sculptures around,” he described. “I tend to get a bit impatient, and the length of this process has taught me patience. If you want to get a good result, you need to take your time.”

Different mediums serve a different personal purpose too. “Painting is very relaxing and calming for me. Working with clay, then again, is a slow process, quite quiet and close to earth. When it is all finished, the desired result is the same though, being proud and satisfied,” Dion described. “As for the creative process, different mediums differ quite a lot. Sculpture, for example, requires a lot more planning.”

Dion’s art is cheeky, filled with humour and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Very much like Dion himself. “There is plenty of serious art out there, and I don’t think I need to be too serious. I try to keep things fairly light-hearted but also make things beautiful with flowing lines, beautiful curves and polished finishes.”

The dog in his art, Lil Dusty, has become Dion Parker’s recognisable trademark, and it all started with a bit of clay that a friend had given him and a little bit of spare time to kill. “I was waiting for my partner to get ready and played with the clay. That turned out to be a dog, and I really liked it. When we got home that night, I made him a fire hydrant to pee on. And now I have done a couple of kids books, comics, animations and more sculptures about him,” Dion said about the dog. “[Through Lil Dusty] I express something humorous I have experienced or a way I am feeling. Lil Dusty is almost like a self-portrait now.”

“Art adds vibrancy to our everyday lives. It makes everything more interesting. So many people connect with other people through art. [Art] is about speaking to someone, about communicating and making someone laugh.”
