Gabriela Azar Schreiner is an Argentinian born, Australian artist who resides and works in Melbourne. Her canvases are energetic, full of movement and colour and have an all-overness of the composition that spills over the edges of the art work.
“Back in Argentina, I was a lawyer. I came to Australia 16 years ago six months pregnant, and life was about to be quite different for me,” Gabriela said about her earlier years in Australia and her path to becoming a full-time artist. “I had painted a couple of paintings before, and when I was home with my children, I thought of painting again. It really went from there, and I have been painting ever since. Now I cannot stop painting; I paint seven days a week. It is who I am now.”

Colour is practically the beginning and the end for Gabriela and her art. Colour is what inspires her and is often the starting point for her creative process.
“I start with a couple of colours, but I end up with lots,” Gabriela described. “Sometimes, it is more planned, and certain colours appeal to me. Then again, sometimes it is all just a beautiful accident.”

“Last week, I was using greens, pinks and reds, because of the flowers that were blooming in my garden. On another week, it might be browns and golds because I would have felt drawn to or comfortable with those colours,” Gabriela said. “I am a very passionate and emotional person. I want to transfer my emotions into the colours. The colours are everything to me!”

Naturally, there are other elements and inspiration that influences Gabriela’s art. Music is one of them. “I paint with music because then I don’t think, I feel. The lines in my art are my movements. Painting becomes the visual representation of my dance.”
The dance reflected in her paintings does not come from a specific genre of music, though. As Gabriela said herself, she is not a fan of anything. The music can be a long, random Spotify playlist, or it can be the same song played over and over again. It is intuitive and as autonomous as is the creative process.

There is an exception to this rule of intuitive, emotional approach, and that is commissioned work. “I need to approach commissioned work differently as the process is different for me; I need to think more and not let emotions take over.”

Gabriela is an outdoor artist who paints inside. But every door and window is always open, and inspiration seems to come from outside regardless of the weather or season. “At the moment, I am working on the flowers of my garden. I am looking for a new colour as well. I think it is time!”
