Fern Siebler’s journey into the world of art is as vibrant and dynamic as her abstract paintings. Growing up in a picturesque region of Victoria, surrounded by the tranquility of nature, Fern’s creative spark was ignited early on. Her path, however, took several turns, including a stint as a graphic designer in Melbourne, before she fully embraced her passion for abstract painting. Over the past seven years, Fern has honed her craft, creating artwork that deeply resonates with themes of nature, emotion, and healing. In this interview, Fern shares the inspirations behind her work, the significance of community, and her aspirations for the future.
I have always been a super creative person since childhood, likely stemming from my surroundings and family growing up in beautiful regional Victoria surrounded by nature, with encouragement to be free to explore whatever path life took me. Upon relocating to Melbourne where I now reside, I trained as a graphic designer (BA. communication design) and worked in this field for several years (still dabble!). I started my abstract painting journey around 7 years ago, and I haven’t stopped painting since.

The dream catcher | 152 x 102cm, Mixed media on canvas
My art is my form of self-expression and healing from my own experiences. My very own form of mindfulness and meditation if it had to have a label! I can completely zone out and drift my mind away often whilst I paint – time seems to pass without even knowing. In terms of nature, I feel at home and at peace when I am surrounded by trees or water, the colours of the sky above, or the sounds of birds chirping their hearts out.

In my art the gold symbolises light, hope and illumination. It’s shimmering presence infuses my artworks with warmth and radiance. As my art journey began as a way to process and attempt to heal from some experiences in my life. I found that utilising gold in my art spoke to me on a deep level, reflecting the idea that out of darkness there will always be light, even if it’s just a tiny little twinkle, both literally and metaphorically.

Hearts and stars | 100 x 100cm, Mixed media on canvas
One of the biggest joys of my life has been meeting and connecting with other artists and people in the creative world. I’ve made some friends for life, and we all support each other along our journeys wherever they may lead us.

In a fleeting moment there you were | 60 x 50cm, Mixed media on canvas
Honestly when I began, I would never have even dreamed any of this would occur. From making my first sale, to every sale now when I still dance around in joy that something has connected with my work! I’m proud of creating many different styles and evolving, and feeling at peace with myself. In terms of collaborations and exposure I have been so grateful to collaborate with brands such as Ella Bache, have my art commissioned for Crown Sydney, and hundreds of prints throughout The Standard by Aria Living in South Brisbane. As well as see my very own artwork aired on national television in Australia not once but multiple times – On renovation shows The Block, House Rules & more recently Dream Home. Thank you Art Lovers Australia!

Dream Home (Channel 7) | Where the light pours in (ii) | 152 x 102cm, Mixed media on canvas
I have found that I thrive on experimenting and evolving my style. I like to dedicate time to just ‘play’! And sometimes (not always – there’s a big pile of half-finished works or ideas in storage!), I create some of my most favourite discoveries and styles, that I then expand upon. I have grown and changed over all these years now and so grateful for the support of Art Lovers Australia as I have evolved, as well as my beautiful supporters and collectors. I have some collectors who own a piece from almost every style I’ve created!

Fairy garden | 28 x 28cm, Mixed media on canvas
My number one goal is for viewers of my art to simply feel some aspect of connection and a sense of calm. I connect so deeply with my paintings and my process that it is almost indescribable sometimes. I often hear my collectors say, “I absolutely love it but I don’t know why”, and I think that is so beautiful, to have someone connect and to not even know why on a conscious level is so powerful. They look and fall in love, feel a connection and they just know it was meant to be for them.

I have many – and I often say who knows where my life will lead me next. One thing I know for sure is I aspire to keep evolving my artistic styles and journey, and keep pushing my creative boundaries. A huge goal of mine is to keep filling up alllllll those blank walls out there, and bring joy to other peoples lives with my art, creating meaningful connections.
