Tabassum Malani is an abstract realist artist who blends abstraction and realism in an intuitive, emotion-driven process. Her work is inspired by transformation and personal experiences, often reflecting themes of resilience, freedom, and emotional depth.
Her art aims to evoke emotions and open-ended interpretations in the viewer. For Tabassum, art is a bridge that connects people subconsciously, allowing each person to find their own meaning within her paintings.
She is an artist who paints not just with her hands but with her soul, using art as a form of self-discovery and storytelling.
We had the pleasure of talking to her about her art, her creativity and all that these encompass.
“I was born into a conservative community where a girl’s future was often predetermined. Education and independence for women weren’t priorities. But I refused to let tradition define my future. With the unwavering support of my family, I dared to dream and challenge the status quo. I pursued civil engineering and for over a decade, I built a career in the Indian government sector.”
“Though stable, my career felt like someone else’s life. I longed for a life that felt more me, one where I could truly express myself. Seeking that freedom, I took a leap of faith and moved to Australia. It was a journey filled with challenges, but in those quiet moments of solitude, I discovered something profound—art. At first, I painted to navigate my emotions, but over time, art became my voice, my way of telling my story, and a path that finally felt like my own.”
“My artistic approach blends abstraction and realism, allowing each piece to emerge organically without premeditation. I draw inspiration from the beauty found in flawed, authentic moments and the boundless freedom of being one’s true self. This intuitive process results in expressive mark-making, bold brushstrokes, and layered textures that evoke depth and emotions.”
“My background in engineering has allowed me to weave logic into creativity, creating art that stimulates both the mind and the soul. Through my work, I aim to inspire viewers to discover their own inner strength and recognize the transformative power of creativity. Each piece I create is a window into my experiences, where resilience and optimism take centre stage. With touches of cheerfulness and an innate sense of curiosity, my paintings invite you to escape into a world of possibilities, where anything feels achievable.”
“I primarily use mixed media and oil paints. These mediums allow me to create layers, which then again, create depth, both literally and metaphorically. Oil paints provide richness, while mixed media allows for experimentation. I love how textures and brushstrokes mirror life’s unpredictability.”
“I enjoy using mixed media. It’s challenging and demands technical knowledge. Different materials have unique properties, and I relish blending them to create depth and texture.”
“ Art allows me to create something that is deeply personal yet open to interpretation. A single painting can speak to people in different ways, reflecting their emotions and experiences. It helps me make sense of the world, embrace the beauty of imperfection, and explore the fluidity of emotions. I love the ever-evolving connection between my work and those who engage with it.”
“My goal isn’t to tell a fixed story but to spark emotions that resonate in different ways for different people.”
“I find inspiration in the in-between moments: the quiet strength of a fleeting glance, the resilience in nature, and the way light falls on a textured surface. Personal experiences, emotions, and the fluidity of life itself deeply influence my work. I also draw inspiration from movement, both physical and emotional. Growth, change, and transition are recurring themes in my art, mirroring how we navigate life.”
“Giving back is important. I support people in need and donate to organisations like Doctors Without Borders. I am also donating a painting to a foundation helping children with cancer.”

“Both are about embracing imperfection. Strength and vulnerability go hand in hand. If my art makes someone feel seen or inspired, then I’ve fulfilled my purpose.”
