The Creative & Earthy Flow of Angela Roskell

“I love to paint large, earthy paintings that represent the golden sandy shores of Australian beaches and the rich colours of the Australian outback. I love to see the detail and flow on a larger scale. It enhances interesting designs created by my acrylic paints reacting with the pouring medium and mixing various colours together.”

Angela Roskell is a Gold Coast artist working and creating abstract art with fluid acrylics. Her large-scale, statement, abstract paintings vary from soft and calm to vibrant and energetic. The never-ending intricacies, details and the flow of the paint are the results of finding the perfect balance between control and coincidence, genuinely enjoying the medium and perfecting her craft and technique over a long time.

“Working with fluid acrylics is a challenging yet fun medium. It is influenced by many factors, all working in combination to produce exciting, eye-catching and beautiful effects in my artwork.  What I love most about acrylic pouring is the feeling of no rules, limits or boundaries. Depending on my mood, I am completely free to control the paint one day and let it flow naturally the next.”

For Angela, the journey of a painting always starts with the colours. Her palette has a robust and earthy-toned base with striking contrasting colours, all deriving from nature. Once the colours have been chosen, she mixes the paint. Due to the nature of the medium, this stage can take up to 4 hours each day, and as she never uses recipes, all her colours differ every time. It all comes back to that balance between control and coincidence.

“I get a bit nervous before each pour. A big canvas can take 4 to 5 litres of paint, and once you start, you have to work quickly as the edges start drying immediately. I do the first pour and add more to it until it comes together. If it doesn’t work, I have to scrape off all the paint and start all over again. Colours and the feel of the paintings are planned, but with the rest, I work with the flow of the paint.”

“I enjoy manipulating my pours with everything I have on offer, including my hands, a pallet knife, popsicle sticks, forks, toothpicks, combs, brushes, yarn and beaded chain. I play with different consistencies of paint, utilise the density of pigments, layering of colours and diverse applications to the canvas to produce many varied designs,” Angela described. “Like nature, as you move one part, the whole painting will change and shift to give way or happily flow and accept what’s happening. My goal is to encourage all parts to move together seamlessly, giving the feel of natural growth and creation. It’s expressive and science. I love that. “

Angela’s art is always a reflection of the emotions she is experiencing and the mood she was in when she painted the canvas. “When I have a lot going on in my life, my art tends to get more blocky and ‘liney’. There is a rigid element to it. Then again, I get the feeling of nature from many of my paintings and the sense of excitement, wonder and the flowing beauty I felt when I was painting.”

Angela comes from an artistic, creative family and was encouraged to draw, paint, write and play music from an early age. While art was always her passion, the idea that it could be a career didn’t seem realistic to her. After a decade as a nurse, and while she loved the profession, she realised something was missing.

“I started selling my paintings on online platforms and received wonderful support from other artists and collectors.  From there, I applied to work with Art Lovers Australia, and this newfound exposure and encouraging support helped spark my career and self-confidence as a professional artist. I have worked in many professions over the years, but nothing compares to the overwhelming positivity and supportiveness I have found in the art industry.”
