Emma Coombes is an emerging Tasmanian artist specialising in photography and lens based art. Her work captures the island’s untamed beauty, revealing moments of magic, mystery, and ephemerality in nature. Through evocative imagery, she explores themes of storytelling and imagination—drawing particular inspiration from the rich and rugged landscapes of Tasmania.
Emma’s work has been exhibited in galleries across Tasmania in both solo and group shows. Her work The Artist Way was shortlisted as a finalist in the 2025 Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize—Australia’s highest value art prize for women.
Her 2025 solo exhibition, Untamed Tasmania: The Wild Natural Heart of Our Island, was held at the Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery from January to April 2025. Her debut 2023 solo show, DEADWOOD enters a world of fantasy and imagination inspired by the forms of dead and dying trees. She has been featured in interviews with ABC Radio Hobart and the Huon News.
Blurring the line between reality and daydreams, Emma’s photography evokes nostalgia, wonder, and a deep connection to the environment. Her moody, dreamlike images invite viewers to step inside Tasmania’s ancient forests and wild spaces. Drawing on her background in Design, Emma ventures beyond the visible world, weaving together fragments of reality using photographic collage, painterly textures, and editing. Her landscapes are shaped by feeling. Surreal and dreamlike where the impossible unfolds.
