G Kustom Kuhl is a Melbourne-based artist who creates mixed media works that look into different worlds.
His pieces make up an interesting combination of inspiration from life [past & present], an interaction with the conscious, sub-conscious and the underlying elements of the spiritual beliefs. This manifests itself in the use of signs, symbols, patterns, found objects and images of his own photography from various places and surroundings. The use of recycled materials, paint, pencils, various textures and methods like de-construction of form, opens up an abstract universe, that encourages the observer to go on a reflective journey in a visual, as well as in the spiritual. Colours and images that evoke memories, emotions also influence the works and help with the communication between artwork and viewer. Making marks, using the images as forms and shapes, using text all add to the emotional experience.
G Kustom Kuhl has been drawing and painting since childhood and has been involved in many exhibitions throughout his lifetime. He studied painting and drawing, graphic design and photography. His art and design work is on permanent display at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum [online], as an example of music artwork of the 2000’s era. Kuhl’s is work is in private collections throughout Australia and the world. His design/artwork has also allowed him to create various Australian music cd artwork in past years for some of Australia’s largest music labels.
