Currently residing in Brisbane, Jess has found herself captivated by the world of art. Her passion for creating has led to many roads and a variety of mediums/methods. Her preference is acrylic; however, she also has frequent carving paintings being prepared in the background. Born in South Africa, Jess moved to Far North Queensland in her late teens. She has always been the “creative child” in class with chalk drawings, paper creations and always sketching (cheekily on the desk), however the transitions of life and changes in culture took priority for Jess. She immersed herself in her newfound home and focused on studying in Brisbane. From here, she received encouragement to pick up a brush and try painting for the first time. It was during covid that Jess decided to give it a go.
Painting and creating has opened a chapter Jess did not anticipate. More vulnerability than anticipated, more self-acceptance and resilience and more challenges to be open to a flexible mindset. Jess learnt painting brought her joy but most importantly, healing. It became a method for coping with anxiety and strong emotions from her past. The simplicity of a painting that brings joy and accomplishment, provided a safe place of healing. This led to participating in various events to support mental health, and exhibitions and auctions that raised funds to support people impacted by mental health difficulties.
Jess loves painting a wide variety of subjects, although birds and dogs will always hold a special place in her heart. Her particular interest is painting pets that capture their spirit and hold a permanent memory for the family to display. Jess also completes carvings, which involves painting layers of paint one at a time and then using a carving tool to create a design. The total number of layers of paint can extend to over 100 layers. These pieces can take months to create, and the reward of the completed piece is overwhelmingly exciting. Jess hopes to keep expanding her art practices and participate in more exhibitions. She has a few more mediums tempting her, and no doubt will be adding them to her list soon.
Jess truly and genuinely hopes her pieces you view, bring you joy and make you smile.
