Joanne Barnes is a contemporary coastal artist whose work is deeply inspired by the ever-changing nature of the sea, the movement of water, shifting light, and the sense of space found along the shoreline.
Inspired by the varied beauty of the West Australian coastline, Joanne’s love of the area is central to her practice, as she creates pieces that not only reflect coastal landscapes but also bring a sense of calm, clarity, and timelessness to interior spaces.
Working primarily in acrylics, Joanne values the medium’s flexibility and fast drying time, which suits her layered approach to colour and texture. Her process blends traditional painting techniques with an intuitive, expressive style. She shifts fluidly between detailed, representational pieces, particularly for commissioned work, and more abstract explorations that are guided by mood and movement.
With a background in graphic design and an interest in interior styling, Joanne brings a strong sense of composition to each piece. She considers balance, palette, and how a work will integrate into a space. Soft coastal tones, blues, greys, neutrals, and sea greens, are central to her palette, and she pays close attention to their interaction across the canvas.
In commissioned pieces, Joanne focuses on capturing personal memories of place, favourite beaches, meaningful views, or special moments in nature. These works are often more refined and specific, while her studio practice allows for greater experimentation and expressive freedom.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries across Australia, including a recent solo exhibition. These experiences have shaped her professional practice and strengthened her connection with collectors and curators.
At the heart of Joanne’s work is a desire to create thoughtful, well-crafted paintings that offer a sense of ease, connection, and the quiet beauty of coastal life.
