New Zealand–Australian artist Linda Kypriadakis explores water as both material and metaphor – a gateway between worlds.
Her paintings reveal the form of water as both semblant and non-representational, combining water’s physical and numinal qualities in a contemporary way. Drawing on Oceanic concepts of spirituality and connection, she creates contemplative works that evoke the quiet power of water seen from above.
Working with acrylic paint and water on aluminium composite panels, her process involves an intuitive response to water, embodying site-specific colours, bold applications of first layers made with unconventional tools, followed by a quietening process of multiple glazes and meticulous sanding, to arrive at a luminous surface that reflects the viewer, inviting them to engage with the delicate balance between the natural world and our place within it.
Rather than depict water, she captures its essence — its stillness, depth, and capacity to hold memory. These human-scale works offer space for reflection, acting as silent sentinels that gently blur the boundaries between the physical and the spiritual.
Her paintings are held in private and corporate collections in the US, Australia and New Zealand.
