Melbourne - Barcelona
Maria Fernandez is an Australian abstract expressionist artist born in Argentina and based in Melbourne and Barcelona. Her technique is based on building textures as well as layers of colour.
Artworks: 39
Maria is inspired by the diversity of textures and colours drawn from nature and by objects and materials that have been used, aged and have been discarded. She is interested in the history embedded in these objects, in their texture of decay.
Maria mainly paints abstract forms that reflect the environment that surrounds her, the elements that she remembers or, for some reason have caught her attention in the past.
She works with different media as oil, acrylic, cold wax, and also with unusual materials like cement, bitumen and ash.
Fernandez experiments with media and techniques that allow her to express with freedom and without boundaries. She is inspired by American Abstract Expressionists, mainly Rothko and Pollock, as well as many Catalan masters of modern times like Tapies, Miro and Picasso.
