Paula Maggs is passionate about art. Balancing her life as a single mother of eight, Maggs maintained a dedicated art practice while studying, culminating in a Master of Fine Art from RMIT in 2023.
Her art allows Maggs to untangle past trauma through the physical act of applying paint to surface. Maggs paints intuitively, embracing the raw materiality of paint to create works that act as psychic maps-physical manifestations of her inner world. As this process unfolds, her subconscious is given free reign, revealing deeply buried self-beliefs imprinted on her from birth. Over time Maggs has become enabled to take ownership of her own identity. Though personal, her story is also universal, her work throwing light on the darker side of the human condition.
Exploring themes of angst, embodiment, and psychological depth,
Maggs continues to develop ongoing series such as The Promised Lands, Forests, and works exploring religious and mythic symbolism.
She exhibits regularly.
