I am fascinated by the way tiny complex structures create seemingly simple entities. I find the fine detail in these entities create the most interest and intrigue. For this reason, each line is intentionally and painstakingly made. Often what evolves are varied gradients within larger shapes.
I experience a sense of calm throughout the process of creating each piece, as if piercing a film under tension. I try to convey this stillness through free-flowing lines and shapes, while the heavy use of negative space holds this feeling in place.
An undercurrent of movement is consistently seen throughout my works, which is brought about through this complex shading and the focus on lyrical abstraction art.
Most importantly, it is the abstract nature that allows my initial thoughts to be interpreted by the viewer based on their beliefs and experiences, therefore giving each piece a fluid meaning. Because of this, I find that each piece not only evolves as I create it, but also as each viewer considers it.
My preferred mediums are charcoal and graphite, due to their reliably gritty texture and depth of colour. In contrast, I enjoy experimenting with different paper to see how the surface textures influence the choice of image that might result.
