Sonia Mattson is an Art school graduate from Sydney who has been painting and exhibiting in Australia and overseas for more than forty years. Her long and sustained practice reflects a deep commitment to visual inquiry, technical skill, and an ongoing fascination with light, form, and atmosphere. Working across a wide range of media, including graphite, charcoal, oils, acrylics, and digital tools, Sonia moves fluidly between traditional and contemporary approaches to image-making.
Her favourite subjects include still life, flowers, portraits, nudes, and urban landscapes. In her still life and floral works, Sonia is drawn to the quiet presence of objects and the subtle interplay of light across surfaces. She takes pleasure in careful observation, precision, and detail, seeking to capture the essence of everyday forms and reveal the beauty of the ordinary. Light is central to these works, shaping mood and lending depth, intimacy, and a sense of contemplation to seemingly simple subjects. Through considered composition and tonal balance, she invites the viewer to slow down and look more closely.
Portraiture also holds a special significance in her practice. Sonia is fascinated by the way light falls across a face, revealing external features while hinting at the emotional life within. Her portraits aim to convey both likeness and inner presence, balancing sensitivity with psychological insight. Throughout her work, colour plays a vital expressive role. She uses colour intuitively to express feeling and to create atmosphere, allowing emotion and meaning to emerge through nuanced relationships of hue and tone.
Whether depicting objects, places, or people, Sonia Mattson’s art reflects a sustained curiosity, a reverence for observation, and a desire to create works that resonate quietly and deeply with the viewer.
