Art
How exciting! You’ve purchased a beautiful piece of art from one of our talented artists here at Art Lovers Australia, but how do you look after it once you have it home?

‘How do I look after my artwork’ is one of the most common questions we get asked here at Art Lovers Australia, as everyone wants to keep their artwork looking great for years to come.

Amelia Pontifex | Art Consultant
To help you, Amelia Pontifix, our Melbourne Art Gallery Art Consultant will share her top five tips for taking care of your artwork.
To keep your artwork looking great for decades to come, always hang it in a place located out of direct sunlight. Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or other artificial light sources can cause colours to fade and ruin your artwork.
“Avoid hanging your artwork in direct sunlight where it can become brittle and degrade over time”, says Amelia. For especially valuable pieces and artwork on paper, UV protective glass can be very beneficial and will protect it from fading.
There’s nothing worse than the loud bang of artwork crashing to the floor because it hasn’t been hung properly! Hanging your artwork using the right equipment is essential.

Before you choose the right materials (screws etc.) you will need to know what the wall is made from and the weight of your artwork. This will ensure the materials you choose are strong enough to hold your artwork and keep it from falling to the floor.

At Art Lovers Australia we sometimes get asked if you can hang your artwork in the bathroom. Bathrooms are damp and have more moisture than any other areas within the home, so while we know it would look lovely, we don’t recommend hanging art in this space.
Even framed and sealed art can be susceptible to damage caused by dampness, so always hang your artwork in dry areas away from any type of moisture like bathrooms, some kitchens and open windows where weather can come inside.
Obviously, if your artwork is framed with glass it’s ok to use a cloth and cleaning products (spray onto the cloth, not directly onto the glass), however unframed artwork should NEVER be subjected to cleaning products such as solvents, bleaches and other household chemicals.
Artwork can also be damaged by water, so we recommend keeping it dry and dusting your artwork with microfibre cloths or feather dusters. It’s always best to speak to an expert if your artwork is marked and you’re unsure of what to use to clean it.
Moving? Always wrap your artwork with bubble wrap and cardboard to stop it from being damaged when you are moving house. Pack it securely and ensure the corners are protected. It should be stored somewhere cool, dry and out of direct light with no humidity. Artwork should never be left packed in plastic for long periods of time.
