A Thread of History – Limited edition (20) print by Jeska Valk

Lace is symbolic due to its ability to be so fragile but strong in contrast. It’s complexity is woven like our DNA.

Passed down from her family Jeska has inherited many garments.  Her mother, a seamstress, taught Jeska how to sew, which further fuelled her passion for the fabric and its symbolism.
Inspired by the finely painted lace detail from Master Renaissance and Baroque artists Titian, Rembrandt and Frans Pourbus, lace became more than a delicate piece of fabric but a way to share, connect and honour family.
Diagnosed with Epilepsy, a hereditary condition, Jeska struggled with ongoing seizures, effecting her nervous system.  It was her love for drawing that helped retrain her focus, the high detail was essential in combating the after effects of a seizure.  Art became a way for her to express herself when her verbal communication would fail her. ‘Painting isn’t just a passion for me but a way to channel my difficulties through a creative outlet’.

The lace top was handmade by my mum for her wedding when she was 21.

The lace veil came from Aix-en-Provence in the South of France when my mum and I travelled there back in 2013 for an art history holiday.
