Additional Information

“An Iconic Journey” is a story concerning twelve construction projects etched against a colourful civil twilight sky. At the edge of the lake is a walking trail that is strengthened with six concrete bollards that run the length of the painting. These triangular markers serve to point the viewers gaze towards a cluster of buildings at the left, centre, and right of the artwork.

From the left of the painting the first triangular marker commences the story with the Brutalist architecture of the Mora Gallery being joined to an Old Colonial Georgian style building. And behind these two buildings is the colourful façade of a Modernist inspired building of the A’Beckett tower.

The tower won a residential architecture award in 2011 and is a local icon in Melbourne because of the 16 colours used on the louvres of the tower. The colour gradients of white, green, orange, and red reflect the outback colours of Australia. In keeping with the use of colour in the tower I placed this cluster of buildings under the twilight saturated clouds of pink, magenta and violet.

I have used the water reflection from the lake to achieve harmony, where the water has a small amount of movement, its purpose is to blend the architectural character of each building. My favourite reflection is the architectural melt of Park One and the Oxley apartment complex in the centre of the painting.

In showcasing each unique project, I designed the backdrop to provide the viewer with a sense of coherence between the different structures, whilst simultaneously taking the viewer on a voyage of architectural wonder.
