Auburn Fire 1916 by Josslyn & Martin

This is a A2 Limited edition (100) print is based on a painting by Josslyn, is a symbolic narrative work depicting an angel dressed in white walking through a field of poppies on the Somme in northern France. The imagery draws directly on the Battle of the Somme of 1916, a devastating 141-day Anglo-French offensive an enduring symbol of the human cost of industrial warfare.

In the print, the poppy-filled field represents the fallen. The angel moves carefully among them, gathering and bearing witness, her presence suggesting compassion, mourning, and spiritual reckoning rather than triumph. Among the poppies are corollas—birds native to Australia. Their inclusion is deliberate. These birds stand as a quiet but powerful symbol of the Australian soldiers who fought and died so far from home. Transplanted into a European battlefield, they echo the dislocation and sacrifice of those men, binding Australian memory to a foreign land marked by loss.

Auburn Fire weaves history, symbolism, and remembrance into a single contemplative space, offering a meditation on war, grief, and the fragile persistence of care amid devastation.
