Back Block Priest: by Josslyn & Martin -Limited edition (100) print. Back Block Priest began many years ago, during a drive I took from Brisbane to Perth. When I reached the Nullarbor Plains—an area known for its vast emptiness—my car began to overheat, which made me quite anxious. After some time, I came across a mission filled with smiling First Nations children, cared for by a solitary priest. The image of that priest, quietly looking after the children in such an isolated place, stayed with me. Later, I drew him, and this sketch became the basis for the painting, and now the limited edition Giclée Print. The composition draws on elements from multiple sources, which is how my work often evolves. Images arrive intuitively. The church is based on one in Silverton, NSW. The birds come from many occasions I have witnessed birds fiercely defending their territory. As for the power poles—well, I think viewers can draw their own conclusions.
