Beautiful Planet vi by John Louis Lloyd – abstract study in mixed media.

  • This original abstract painting from the Beautiful Planet series of John Louis Lloyd is a study that was created in mixed media on yupo panel and has been gallery-wrapped on an internal frame.
NB.(Yupo is a tough polypropylene synthetic panel that responds well to watercolour and mixed media) In this case, multiple laminations of archival varnish protect the artwork and due to it’s gallery-wrap presentation, a floating or fitted frame could be easily added if you want to tie it into your current decor).
This abstract artwork is a vibrant, layered composition that evokes a sense of organic movement and geological complexity. At its centre, deep purples and indigos dominate, interwoven with patches of soft yellow, cream, and lavender that resemble mineral veins or weathered rock surfaces. These colours flow and interact with each other, creating a dynamic surface full of visual depth. The textures are rich and layered, due to the use of various mixed media techniques—possibly pouring, stippling, or palette knife work—to achieve an almost tactile, crystalline effect. The overall impression is one of a naturally occurring form in transformation, like a coral reef, meteor surface, or geological strata seen from above.Surrounding this central mass are more fluid areas of teal, turquoise, and rust, which balance the dense centre with openness and light. These colours drift into each other softly at times and clash sharply at others, producing a tension that adds energy and movement. There’s a sense of terrain and atmosphere in the transitions—perhaps suggesting oceanic, planetary, or even microscopic landscapes. The interplay between metallic sheens and matte areas adds to the dimensionality, making the painting feel alive with shifting perspectives. It’s a work that invites close inspection and personal interpretation, rich in colour, form, and emotion.
