Belle’s Jar by Karen Chappelow

“Belle’s Jar”
After Sylvia Plath-The Bell Jar 1963, Lee Miller-Tanja Ramm under a Bell Jar 1930, Cecil Beaton-Lady Loughborough Under a Bell Jar 1927
This painting is a tongue-in-cheek statement on females being objectified, the muse and trophy. The suffocating reality of being a woman. Being held in a transparent prison, the madness this sometimes brings on and the divide between mind and body.
The final words in Sylvia Plath’s-The Bell Jar. “I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart I am I am I am”. These words define my piece – that of survival, self-discovery and resilience. Sometimes found with wine, sometimes when the glass comes off.
This piece is an acrylic and mixed media piece with her body being heavily textured
