Beneath the Surface by Sam Brett – Oil on canvas. I built up the layers slowly, using glazes to create a sense of translucence and depth in the water. Fine, fluid brushwork captures the ripples and highlights, while darker underpainting grounds the composition. Oil paint allows the surface to feel both fluid and solid, echoing the shifting, living quality of the sea itself. This painting focuses on the intimate surface of the ocean — the way light shifts across water, turning from deep shadow into luminous green. I was drawn to the tension between darkness and clarity, how the sea can feel both mysterious and transparent at once. The scattered highlights suggest movement, but also a sense of calm, like standing still and watching the water breathe. It’s a meditation on depth, surface, and the constant flux of the sea.
