Bowl of Shells by Carol Forster.

This sculptural bowl is handmade in fine porcelain clay.

I live near the beach and love to collect bits and pieces of shells from the shoreline. On taking them back to my studio I make plaster moulds from the individual pieces. Each moulded porcelain shell is then painstakingly applied to the bowl.

I have chosen to make this bowl in porcelain as the name, porcelain in English, comes from the old Italian porcellana (cowrie shell) because of its resemblance to the translucent surface of the shell.
