Breathless by Jackie Moss

This work was inspired by the confronting images of thousands of native dead fish floating upon the Darling River in 2023.  An environmental disaster on a scale rarely seen before;  Where the combined effects of recent flooding, organic matter, high temperatures and the bloom of extraordinary bacterial growth – combined to threaten the fish population and communities along the river.

The visual impact across the media reminded me not only of the human impact but the treat to the millions of other living species threatened by climate change in our river systems.

I created this work using several glazes of oil colour to create a deep translucent effect, wiping and reapplying with a cloth to sketch the shadowy fish shapes.  Oil sticks were used to enhance the shape and glistening quality of the fish rising and swirling just beneath the surface of the water
