Burnt Out : Raining Series by Kate Constantine

December 2020

The Raining Series of works are as viewed from my place in bed, whilst pondering motherhood, womanhood and what its like to be a woman. Many mothers feel a stronger connection to Country and Culture after the birth of a child, and for me this is absolutely the case.

DIDACTIC:

I’m beginning to feel and look quite heavily pregnant, for the third time in 6 years in fact. It is in this beautifully chaotic, hormonal and creative (literally I am creating new life) that I am reminded a lot lately of the cycle of life. There is death, and there is life – but there is also this wondrous space in-between: Growth. It is in this most wondrous place of growth that we humans busy ourselves overly so, we get so distracted by things that are not really very important and we forget all about the growing part. Upon reflecting on the year 2020 and the 12 months of sheer turbulence; the fires, the floods, the pandemic, the isolation, the devastation and disaster….I can see, feel and am the physical embodiment of growth…… and for me, sitting firmly in this state of growth there flows… hope.

This painting is conflicted in its materials both raw and natural and manufactured. The palette chosen for its nod to the land but also to the devastation that land and its people have endured this past year. Yet there is a glimmer of hope both literal and metaphorical.
