Carpenter Bee and Mock Orange by Sam Askin

Think how many times you have been in your garden or in a park and one of those loud, buzzing bugs suddenly rips around your head, and you’re left shadow boxing it without knowing what it is… good chance is it’s one of these majestic ladies! Australia has over 2,000 species of native bee, all of which DON’T sting, and the Great Carpenter Bee is one of the coolest! It looks like what we all would call a “bumblebee”, lives in wood burrows it has dug all for itself, lives alone, and loves to snack on your flowers! I’m totally in love with Australia’s bees, and have two hives of a different species as well. These ladies are one of my favourite though, and i was very lucky to catch a perfect shot of one out for lunch on a mock orange plant in my garden.
I love finding meaning in a painting of something I’m already in love with as a topic. This artwork is a perfect shelf-sized reminder to stop for a second, take notice of what’s around you, and appreciate all the little things you might not nroamlly give a second thought to. This lady works her entire life to feed her babies and herself, but always gets to hang out with the best looking and smelling flowers of her choice. Maybe we can all aim to be a bit like a Great Carpenter Bee!?
