Choo choo barleese by Karen Chappelow

I am exploring the randomness of words, how David Bowie and William S Burroughs composed works and the Dadaists movement in general. So I placed a call out to my friends asking a few questions (below) and then cut each answer into strips, numbered them and then randomly selected 1-5 of each category to compile a nonsensical paragraph in which then I am trying to make sense of nonsense-here’s one.

  1. Favourite song, lyric or line-“I have become comfortably numb”
  2. Favourite movie/book quote-” Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers.”
  3. Favourite slogan/protest line or statement-“All you get to choose is what you do with the time that you have left”
  4. What advice would you give your younger self-“don’t shrink for others”
  5. What would you do differently-“my body my choice”

The trainspotting quote-Choose life and the slogan about choosing what to do with your time and the final advice to self about having body autonomy really played the central role of this painting appearing. I do fall off the edge about with a train theme running through obviously from Trainspotting and the Choo Choo Bar (now extinct Aussie favourite candy bar). Barleese a term screamed out at school and during games as a permission to stop play and did originate from the pirate term ‘parlay’ to surrender. So, I played around with words here. The double headed self with the shrunken side being totally overshadowed by the bolshy self I hope gives some life to the advice to younger self of not shrinking for others.
