I have a bit of a thing for clouds – and I don’t think I am alone in this! Their stunning forms, their infinite variety – not to mention that they are very useful for keeping us alive by bringing rain, and cooling the planet by reflecting solar radiation 🙂

I work a lot with satellite data, and this image uses the Landsat satellite to produce a stunning image of a cloud formation that sat over the Great Australian Bight on the 13th of November 2014. The numbers in the title are a kind of code – 101/83 are Landsat path/row coordinates, so between that and the date you can actually work out exactly where and when this cloud existed!

Things get weirder from here though: the Landsat satellite records imagery in “bands” of different wavelengths, some of which is “visible” light, and some of which is infrared. This image uses the Cirrus band, which is a very specific infrared wavelength range designed just to capture cirrus clouds, which are very high and very cold, and their wispy forms are treated by scientists as a kind of “noise” in satellite imaging. The cirrus band is actually used to REMOVE cirrus clouds from scientific data, so it’s really just there for algorithmic filtering.

So in other words – this is an image designed never to be seen by human beings!
