PAINTING OF CLIFF FACE, SELLICKS BEACH, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Original art by Maureen Finck. I was inspired to do this painting of the cliff face, Sellicks Beach after spending a day there marveling at the majestic cliffs and beautiful scenery.

The big, prominent hills of Sellicks Hill Range are simply spectacular.

TAKING IN THE SCENERY

Sellicks Beach is 53 kilometres from Adelaide, South Australia.

Sellicks Beach is part of a coast rail walk.  This spectacular section of the Coast Park Trail offers a short meander along the top of the dunes of Sellicks Beach. The trail features beach access at either end of the trail with amazing coastline scenery

Trekking along the shoreline will give you an unbeatable view and insight into the incredible geology on the coast.

The cliffs are overwhelmingly tall at some points, towering over beach goers. The land is shaded in a blend of earthy colours and has some interesting fauna growing out the side.

Along the water’s edge, there is an array of rock pools that are home to many small marine creatures like crabs and starfish. Unique shells and pebbles add even more character to the fascinating beach.

SELLICKS BEACH IS VERY OLD

It is estimated that the mountain-building sedimentary rocks of Sellicks Beach. were deposited over the time spanning about 870 to 500 million years ago.

Since that time, substantial erosion has reduced the former mountain range to relatively low altitude remnants.

BEAUTIFUL SMOOTH PEBBLES

During winter, when storms are common, vigorous waves erode sand from the beaches and transport it offshore, where it is temporarily deposited as one or more sand bars.

Removal of sand during winter exposes a mass of gravel.

Wave action reshapes grains of all kinds and sorts sand from gravel. The predominantly quartz sand becomes rounded, polished and well sorted. Larger angular fragments are rounded to form pebbles and cobbles. A gravel beach of such materials is sometimes referred to as a shingle beach, especially when the particles have a flattish form.

As well as painting of the cliff face, Sellicks Beach, I feel there are other paintings to come of this beautiful part of South Australia.
