Before fibreglass boats, boats were made from wood. These were the work horses all along the coastal rivers in Australia. The planks along the sides were overlapped from the keel up to the gunnels, and the were very seaworthy boats.

oyster farmers, fishermen, as well as pleasure seekers used these boats. Many had single cylinder motors installed, and these became know as putt putts, mainly because that was the sound made by the slow reving motors.
