Colour Disk 4 by Stephen Baxter is one 50 x 50 cm disk collage in a series of works that looks at Matisse’s cut-out series as the initial inspiration. Rather than Matisse’s paper collages, this series is made from painted canvas. Each shape on the canvas is hand-cut from previously painted canvases and glued to a painted backing canvas that is stretched over a ply circle. The texture of the canvas is a prominent feature. Each piece can be hung in several orientations or grouped together as seen in the below image. Each work is ready to hang. I had a lot of fun making this series, the works seemed to gravitate towards a landscape theme with some bird-like qualities evident. What can you see in these colorful images?
