Cormorant 1 by Lyn Graham

This painting is part of my Habitats > Shore series. It’s a watercolour on cotton paper.

The creatures along the shoreline fascinate me, especially the crabs and birds.

I love the birds who perch on the rocky headlands ever watchful for food and intruders. Some of my favourites are oystercatchers and cormorants.

Cormorant 1 was inspired by the cormorants I would see swimming in the bays around Bruny Island Quarantine Station. They would splash and beat their wings on the surface of the water as they chased fish in the shallows.

I also love the flocks of migratory birds such as the Eastern Curlews and Bar-tailed Godwits who travel thousands of kilometres each year to be on our shores. It is shameful that we are destroying their habitats.
