Corona Queen XIX: by Brendan Walsh (coldghost)

This work was a finalist in 2020 Gosford Art Prize

Urban Art Pop mixed Painting

This original artwork is made using Recycled Street Posters collected off the Streets of Sydney & takes inspiration directly from Graffiti in City Laneways and Advertising Billboards.

The background was built up with layers of paint and paper before the main Collage of The Queen was then sketched on with Paint Pens and further overlaid with paper and paint and given the essential fashion accessory in 2020 a face mask.

The Artwork was Created to fit a large Vintage Frame, juxtaposing the modern graffiti vibe, with the old world portrait frame.

This artwork has a textured finish created by built up layers, paint splatters and torn paper, a visual effect mimicking the look you would see in the street where this effect is created over time. These imperfections are part of the overall look and feel of the finished work. The vintage gold frame also has a very rustic feel with chipped paint and chunks missing, rubbed back in sections and overlaid with glitter paint.

This work comments on the current pandemic and how the virus doesn’t discriminate, anyone can contract it, regardless of your race, gender, age or Socio Economic situation.

This year’s Gosford Art Prize received a record number of entries, over 950. So to be one of the 90 paintings selected to be hung in as a finalist was a very rewarding experience.
