“Craters Brow’ by Meg Shaw was inspired by south-western Victorian landscape, particularly around Warrnambool and down to Portland – Gunditjmara Country. Originally, an active volcanic area, First Nation stories tell of High Head, a now dormant and extinct volcano, spilling forth lava to create the hills, landscape, wetlands and waterways.

In ‘Crater’s Brow’, I’ve created a semi-abstracted, original painting from a collection of impressions of this ancient and rugged area. The painting has a contemporary style that has been fragmented into linear shapes, representing the hills, fissures and rocks that are now familiar to the environment. It’s also textured, layered and influenced by my love of design (including stained glass art).

Practically speaking, my influences come from my many remembered impressions of travel through parts of Australia. While walking through our natural environment, I enjoy taking in the images from the sky to the ground (including caves), using all my senses.

At an emotional level, I start painting by sketching out my thoughts and feelings directly onto the canvas with paint. I don’t paint en plein air and I don’t do prepatory drawings, nor do I take photos to copy. After sometime of working on the canvas, I feel the direction by ‘listening’ to the story it seems to be telling. I hope that those who view my paintings see a story, too.

‘Crater’s Brow’ is a mixed media painting (acrylics, inks and charcoal) on stretched canvas. It’s been framed in Tasmanian Oak measuring approximately 95 x 49.5 x 4 cm. It was painted with respect to Eastern Maar people, traditional owners of south-western Victoria, and in recognition of this beautiful, culturally significant landscape.

The photos include the finished painting, close-ups, the frame and situ shots. Please note: I use an art app for virtual settings, so the situ photos are intended to show what the painting might look like hanging on a wall.

‘Craters Brow’ comes with a certificate of authenticity. It will be posted via Auspost. It will be protected inside a case, wrapped in recycled bubble wrap and packed in recycled cardboard. As I live in rural Tasmania now,  please allow a little more time for delivery. Thank you.
