Cudlee Creek by Sam Askin

While I am born and bred in tropical North Queensland, my partner is from the opposite end of Australia… South Australia to be exact. My first visit there, and to this day, I am in awe of the stark nature of the landscape of barren, earthy hills spotted with the odd eucalypt here and there, until suddenly you are met with a creek bed absolutely packed full with native flora in such contrast to the dominating openness preceding and following. Driving the South Australian hills near the Clare Valley is like moving through a different world compared to my tropical North Queensland home. I have tried to capture this contrast on this new work and painting it was as much as journey as taking in the scene in real life!

I envisage this piece as a statement that represents an escape to the openness, warmth and diversity of a place that you can sit and daydream of from your living room or master bedroom. You can feel the “foreverness” of these hills as you star into the horizon, and wonder what lies hidden in the dense trees lining the creek. If you can feel all of this when taking in this work, I’d love for it to be yours!
