Don’t Doubt Your Worth by Elise Judd

Do you have a convict past?
This work is part of a ‘convict’ series I am working on.  This works talks about unintended immigration and leaving one’s homeland to go to another country(against your will).  It are full of symbols of home(mainly celtic) and the  tattoos that are displayed on her body depicts the link to her family and homeland.
In this painting I reimagine the often untold story of female convicts sent to Australia, echoing my own heritage. This artwork is a story of family connections, and a testament to resilience.

Within the canvas, I delve into the past. It’s a connection that transforms shame into a source of strength and pride. As the painting unfolds, I explore the heart-wrenching realities faced by these women — torn from their homeland, their children left behind in Ireland, yet adorned with tattoos that vividly tell their stories. Fascinatingly, this artwork magnifies the fact that 15% of these women had tattoos, mostly concealed on their legs and arms, often initials of loved ones left behind. These tattoos become poignant symbols of love, loss, and spirit.

On her chest she has the Claddagh symbol  which represents her link to her homeland.  She has a hessian dress depicting the poverty that many of these young girls came from.  Also the images of Captain Cook on her dress symbolizing the change in her future (for better or worse as a result of her transportation to Australia)
This is the first time I have incorporated my family history story into a body of work.
