Fire by Rehgan De Mather

This painting began in 2008. Its original iteration was a stripped back, minimal work combining painting with printmaking techniques focused upon texture and impact.

In 2014 it was taken off the stretcher and placed on the studio floor, capturing the marks left behind from other works, while sections of the painting were sliced, sampled and collaged upon other constructions.

I have always enjoyed the concept of destruction as a form of creation. Through its dissection the work evolved, demanding reassessment, resulting in resurrection upon fresh canvas; it’s destruction serving as the departure point for a new creation.

Seven years later, it returned to the studio one last time, taking on new forms, composition, and meanings, indiscernible from its past yet somehow capturing its journey while recording its transformation.
