The Block Collection – ‘Fire at the Block’ by  Andrea Ward

ORIGINAL mixed media & collage work on beautiful Italian paper  ready to frame (this painting is currently unframed)

It was 1889 and The original Block arcade  caught on fire however it was unlike  as we know it today.  The great fire on the Block site in  Melbourne gave reason to form the very Metropolitan (MFB) Fire Brigade as it took sometime to get the fire under control. The architects Twentyman & Askew were given the task of designing the new arcade which was finally opened between 1891 & 1893. As a young designer I loved the arcade & in late 2000 together with my husband we established MCM STUDIO retail outlets with the Block arcade being the Flag ship store. Collections of beautiful silk ties, scarves etc made in Italy gave homage to the stunning mosaic floor, original pieces of mosaic paper of which are used in some of the paintings in the mixed media collection.
