‘FIRST DAY OF THE CHRISTIAN SUN’ Painted by Tillian 6.4’25

“When they named this place ‘terra nullius’

She laughed,

for her shadow was already there,

pressed deep into the seabed

like a signature no empire can erase”.

“First Day of the Christian Sun” confronts the foundational mythos of colonisation in Australia—the moment when imperial vision declared an ancient continent ‘empty’ and bathed it in the moral and optical clarity of a ‘Christian’ sun. Visually lush yet ideologically harrowing, the work stages a struggle between submerged memory and imposed narrative. The whale beneath the bay, lips across the sky, and dragon-shaped headland suggest Indigenous memory, language, and power suppressed beneath the rising glare of the “Christian sun.”  A dreamscape charged with symbolic force, this painting reflects on the colonial arrival in Australia as both a literal and metaphysical dawn.

Through luminous colour and mythic abstraction, my painting mourns what was submerged—and dares to make it visible again.
