First on the Beach by Shirley Dougan

This is an original artwork of Durdle Door which is a natural rock formation in Dorset on the Jurassic Coast.

I visited this site in 2014, and it is a subject I have painted a few times.

Durdle Door is a popular tourist destination, but I have depicted it sans the tourists.

The ocean is always a powerful thing and the rock formation is an interesting shape. I like to imagine that it is a magical portal to somewhere else – and perhaps it is.

It’s wild and wonderful, the sea is pulsating and the gulls are screeching.

In all my artworks, Golden brand paints are my choice. I love their highly-pigmented colours.

I have used a gloss varnish (over an isolation coat, which means that the varnish can be removed without damage to the paint) to enhance the colours even more.
